About the Department

Established in 1992 at the University of Dhaka.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the University of Dhaka (CSEDU) was established in 1992 and is part of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology.

CSEDU offers a four-year Bachelor of Science, a 1.5-year Master of Science, a two-year MPhil, and PhD programs in Computer Science and Engineering, along with professional masters programs in Information and Cyber Security (PMICS) and Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering (PMAIDE).

Welcome to CSEDU

It is my immense pleasure to welcome you all to the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Dhaka, also known as CSEDU. CSEDU is a place where the brightest minds from home and abroad assemble to build their future careers at highly reputed organizations.

The department has been inspiring generations of computer scientists and engineers, and continues to push the boundaries of teaching and research in computing for the benefit of the nation and beyond.

History

The journey of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering started on a bright morning of September 1992, founded through the vision of Professor Dr. M. Lutfar Rahman. The department began modestly, offering only an M.Sc. degree in Computer Science within the Faculty of Science, with an initial cohort of 20 students.

A three-year B.Sc. (Honours) program was introduced in 1994 and expanded to four years in 1997, the first such program in the faculty. The department was renamed Computer Science and Engineering in 2004, and in 2008 it moved to the newly established Faculty of Engineering and Technology, followed by the adoption of a four-point grading system in 2010.

Over three decades CSEDU has grown into one of the strongest homes for computing education and research in the region. Twenty-seven undergraduate batches and thirty-three graduate cohorts have graduated, and the department today has 32 faculty members.

  1. 1992

    Founded in September under the Faculty of Science, offering an M.Sc. in Computer Science to an initial cohort of 20 students.

  2. 1994

    Introduced a three-year B.Sc. (Honours) program.

  3. 1997

    Expanded the B.Sc. to a four-year program, the first of its kind in the faculty.

  4. 2004

    Renamed the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.

  5. 2008

    Joined the newly established Faculty of Engineering and Technology.

  6. 2010

    Adopted a four-point grading system across the faculty.

Impact

Contributions at the national level

CSEDU faculty and graduates work well beyond the campus. The department built and runs the admission automation system for the University of Dhaka, and its faculty are regularly called on to plan, implement, and review the security of computing and information systems that the country depends on.

Infrastructure planning, implementation, security analysis, and operating principles for organisations including:

  • National Tier 4 Data Center
  • Central bank and other public banks
  • National education and research network
  • Identification System for Enhancing Access to Services (IDEA), Election Commission of Bangladesh
  • Bangladesh Police
  • Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission
  • E-passport project

Education and talent development

Faculty shape computing education and competitive talent pipelines nationwide through:

  • Curriculum development at school, college, and university level
  • Judging and training for the national Mathematics, Informatics, and Robotics Olympiads
  • National Skills Development Competition
  • Master trainers for the Information Technology Engineers Examination (ITEE), jointly sponsored by the ICT Division and JICA
